guiding me through life
by jennifer kiley

guiding me through life
my conscience comes first
to my mind
living a life
with good principles
raised in a congregational church
belonging to the youth
and senior choir
being part of the youth fellowship
going to church school
twice a week
one being on Sunday
after the children’s church service
the other is
walking over from grammar school
during the week

what did i learn
the man who killed Jesus
flew airplanes
or so i thought
i daydreamed a lot
his name was Pilate
which sounded like pilot
never noticed the spelling
so i thought
a pilot killed Jesus
why he would want to do such a thing
was absurd
i thought
not necessarily
in those exact words

i imagined things
heard half of what the boring people
were babbling

i use to see a light surrounding the minister
during the sermon
when i looked away
he was every place
my eyes would wander
the sermons were so long
i don’t think one
made any sense

i was there for the choir
it was the music i loved
the candles too

once during communion
i actually went into a meditative trance
I was jolted back from a state of bliss
when someone touched me
to take the small silver cup
which once held the fake blood of Christ
which wasn’t even wine
but instead was grape juice
plus the bread
which was supposed to be
the symbolic body of Christ
it was my only sustenance
until lunch/ breakfast after church

this was the start
but brought eventually
a disillusionment
that broke my belief
in the church forever
the person i most respected
turned out to be a bigot

i wandered through life
discovered my own belief system
a living breathing changing entity
that lives within me
around me
and through me

i am an honest person
a real and true person
kind and who i am
trusting when possible
truthful a necessity

i am learning
to understand
who i am
i have rage
that i am trying
to get beyond
it is covering up
a volcano i cover
holding back emotions
that would overwhelm me
into a state of pure divine madness
if it were released
too soon
or all at once

many horrific things
happened to me
in my life
a great deal
when i was a child
the rest
my life
i’ve lost
many people to death
most too young
suddenly unexpected

at present
my therapist
expressed to me
i am
an emotional

i’m holding on
by a thin thread
of hope and reality
and a great deal
of imagination…

Review: ‘Orange Petals’ in a Storm by Dr Niamh Clune – magical realism/ metaphysical fiction

orange petal cover I give you a quote that may influence you to read the full review of the book “Orange Petals in a Storm” and to then go out and find this book and make it your own as I have and other books by Dr. Niamh Clune. And enjoy and be caught in the imagination of Skyla McFee and in the writing of such an inspirational and enlightening writer and artist as Niamh Clune. I have had the pleasure of knowing about her writing for awhile now and find that they are at the front of my reading list. I read and reread Niamh Clune’s writing and her poetry and the writing on her blog … it is one of my regular blog spots besides my own. j.k. Jennifer kiley ps. I forgot to include the quote when I reblogged the review post. so here it is: “Modern metaphysical/visionary literature often crosses genres and enters into the little celebrated field of magic realism. In this genre, the supernatural is part of tangible reality; spirit and nature are interwoven, inseparable, and unquestioned, and the extraordinary is made ordinary. Metaphysical literature tells tales of the inner life. Usually these tales are told simply, in prose that reaches to express the beauty inherent in us and in the world about us. Its task is to give voice to soul and its yearning to transcend the suffering of everyday reality.”

Juliet Died First
By Jennifer Kiley
11.28.12 #29

Juliet died first
Followed by her Romeo
But low, what light through yonder window breaks
It is the East and Juliet is the sun
Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,
Who is already sick and pale with grief
That thou, her maid, art far more fair than she

this is fate responding
to its betrayal
two strangers are drawn together
after meeting
while masked in disguise
touching hands
as though touching all
is a heartfelt fantasy
held in a loving imagination
not impossible to do
does one join so quickly in bonding?
in such a rapid
strong and powerful way?

their fate was sealed
when they felt they could create
their own destiny
everything that was planned
followed through
in the most clumsiest of manners
a messenger with a note
that meant death to the receiver
and his beloved
if it was not served in time
can anyone depend on time
to travel at the pace
one needs it to succeed
in a great but foolish plan indeed
one’s life depends on it
but time is not there to help
but in all cases
to hinder every moment
that is dear

if only it had been spoken
a longer soliloquy
or the poison
was not given at all
but replaced smartly by another
not quite so deadly
to save the ending
and no dagger to use
just in case
but what a foolish blunder
the priest set in motion
by giving wrong counsel
instead finding a wise answer
to their dilemma
not setting in motion
their destiny
there was no survival
once this plan was set in motion
love will have its way
it is stronger than life itself
the sacrifice will be made
when separated by the fates
a powerful force to put off course
it was not to be
with Juliet and her Romeo

young love seems
it must be now
or all is destroyed
beyond control
it is beyond control
even at an age
far passed youth
but the answer is not suicide
thinking life is over
at the loss of a passionate lover
feels so powerful
your screams sound
throughout the universe
calling out for her soul
your voice will carry far
breaking into the spirit world
the message passed along

her spirit will return
to where you are
guiding you
through your pain
never to abandon you again
it was a temporary leave
finding what she could do
if you only knew
you were as blind as Romeo
he didn’t trust Juliet
to be there for him either
he left her first
what was she to do
she had to take her life
she couldn’t live without it
Romeo had taken her heart
when he killed himself
in that moment he killed her too

love should not be
so all consuming
there are other ways
to resolve the issues
taking control
trust yourself
keep your love alive
find a better way
than wanting to die
doing it
is no answer
seek out
a different
it can be

Black Friday, Cyber Monday: One Writer’s Dilemma in a Commercial Age

Lovely art topping the page, and it seems my blog page too. I know that Shawn MacKenzie created this art herself. The story you concoct is a hypothetical conclusion to a possibility. My philosophy prefers to chose the magical story that I learned as a child during all the many Christmas pageants I participated in when schools were allowed to celebrate Christmas in this fashion. I’m not so sure anymore if this pleasure has been taken away in favor of so mish mash of a generic celebration of the season of a plethora of holiday celebrations. I am not saying that everyone should not have a voice, I am just saying it wasn’t a religious thing for me when I was a kid, it was just fun. I think children are left out with all the fighting over separation of church and state. Christmas Trees are fun and once were pagan. Christmas caroling was fun and I think some people did enjoy them. They had a certain beauty to them. The story at Mackenzie’s dragons nest is a good story to tell. Is it a true interpretation of what might possibly have been the case. Sure, it could have been. Is the myth of the manger have a basis in fact, that too could be possible. I enjoy the myth of the manger. Whether I can logically accept a virgin birth, that is another matter. I like to believe in miracles and magic and mystical occurrences. There is plenty of room for all to believe in their own miracles or not. No one should emphatically dismiss anyone’s evaluation of their beliefs or lack there of. This is a great post and a well thought out theory. Accept it if you will or just enjoy and continue to trust in your own beliefs. Read with an open mind and allow yourself to be entertained. All things are possible. Believing in Christmas and celebrating Hanukah is part of my tradition. At our house we also celebrate the Hogfather bringing the toys for the children as well as Santa Claus. Peter Pan and Neverland exists and so do dragons. Chose what you will to believe in. I think and feel it is necessary to believe in something and to live a life filled with meaning. It makes my life fuller. So for those who believe, Happy Holidays for whatever you celebrate and for those who don’t, let others believe what they do and go about your life in your own way. Well done Shawn MacKenzie. Enjoyed the post. Hope others will take them time to visit your page and read it for themselves. It is well worth your time. Don’t forget to enjoy the beautiful art Shawn MacKenzie created that tops the page of her post. J.k. the secret keeper ps. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!!! :-)

MacKENZIE's Dragon's Nest

The day after Thanksgiving Yule trees were stacked against the local supermarkets, hardware and feed stores, early casualties in the annual collision between high commerce and high holidays. Black Friday, a day when, at least here in the States, madness sets in on the side of commerce. Mild-mannered, feast-sluggish human beings turn into fearless berserkers all for the sake of deals on stuff, briefly appreciated yet then long-added to the general clutter of their lives. And then there is Cyber Monday, for those who prefer their shopping on-line instead of in-line (a safer prospect, if reports from last week are valid). Now it seems that some retailers were so thrilled by the cash flowing into their coffers that they are extending the lunacy into today. (A sign of an improving economy people say, and I do hope they’re right.)

But what would the Kings of Holly and Oak think of…

Do You Know What Love Is?
by Jennifer Kiley
11.27.12 #28

do you know what love is?
it’s the repetition
of a piece of music
never tiring of the feelings
elicited through the variations
plays through the layers
that lift you to the highest
altitudes and lowest depths
the composer laid out
for your anticipation
satisfaction releases
excitement’s conclusion

do you know what love is?
a rose bud waiting
the sun for warmth
the sky for food to rain
the onlooker for time
the photographer
for the rose to bloom
the colours blended hue
the perfect moment
click! click! click!
amazing photographs
created with
ultimate alignments
a photo is chosen
for her presentation
to the romantic lover
of nature’s pure
photographic stature

do you know what love is?
being haunted by memories
loving so much one
who is lost
they live in every beat
of your heart
they were taken
suddenly and young
life’s path stretched out
prepared to live
excitement for college studies
psychology and therapists together
writer and poet
all lost that night
wasted words
in the wind
echoing her voice
with resounding hope
she follows me
guiding and protecting
letting go
impossible for either side
love holds us together
throughout it all
a sound on the piano
says it all
her voice carries
in the music
communicating with me
in her own way
love is anything
that brings feelings
of joy and pain
tears and laughter
playing in the soft falling rain
every rain drop
her hand touching
hear the voices
feel their touch
a chill in a moving scene in a film
brings you together
open up feel the whisper

do you know what love is??
getting a message from a friend
reaching out with their love
sensing they are near
and suddenly you receive
an essence of their presence
flooding your senses
overcoming your sadness
creating an inner smile
that’s held in private
valuing it’s embrace
feelings it’s erased
the words filled
with meaning that overwhelm
washing away
momentarily missing them
beneath the surface
emotions are brewing
release them now
or explosions will come
holding onto emotions
can blow you to the dark
look for the light
it will come
call it to you
think of her
feel her in your heart
a good start

do you know what love is?
an experience everyone should feel
as deeply inside
let it go
it will come back
if you open your heart
bravely wide
so much love
will share its self
with you
the world will be blessed
imagine love
it’s all up to you
to spread it all around
to everyone
in every town
all over
the world

J.R.R. Tolkien: English writer, scholar and philologist…When his father died in 1896 his mother took him and his younger brother to his father’s native village of Sarehole, near Birmingham, England. The landscapes and Nordic mythology of the Midlands may have been the source for Tolkien’s fertile imagination to write about ‘the Shire’ and ‘hobbits’ in his later book the Hobbit (1937)…Tolkien will be remembered most for his books the Hobbit (1937) and the Lord of the Rings (1954-55). The Hobbit began as a bedtime story for his children that in his own words “grew in the telling”. He wrote Lord of the Rings over a period of about 14 years which started by him sending his children bits and pieces of the story in his letters. Tolkien also discussed parts of his novels with fellow Oxfordian and fantasy writer CS Lewis during their ‘meetings’. He was trying to create a fantasy world so that he could explain how he had invented certain languages, and in doing so created ‘Middle Earth’. However among his peers at Oxford his works were not well received as they were not considered ‘scholarly’. It was after LOTR was published in paperback in the United States in 1965 that he developed his legendary cult following and also imitators…He received the CBE in 1972…Despite the immense popularity of his books today Tolkien did not greatly benefit from their sales. His son Christopher Tolkien was able to publish some of his works posthumously after his manuscripts were found.

“When you run with the Doctor, it feels like it’ll never end. But however hard you try you can’t run forever. Everybody knows that everybody dies and nobody knows it like the Doctor. But I do think that all the skies of all the worlds might just turn dark if he ever for one moment, accepts it. Everybody knows that everybody dies. But not every day. Not today. Some days are special. Some days are so, so blessed. Some days, nobody dies at all. Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair, and the Doctor comes to call… everybody lives.” ~ Steven Moffat ~
